A new major vaccination center is set to open at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights on Feb. 24.

The center is one of two Community Vaccination Centers (CVCs) the White House is opening in partnership with the state, the White House said Wednesday in a press release.

The second center will be established at York College in Queens.

The release said the sites will be will be capable of administering thousands of vaccinations per day, with Governor Andrew Cuomo saying on Twitter the sites will vaccinate 3,000 people daily.

The sites were chosen due to their proximity to communities most in need, using the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index. The index considers socioeconomic status, household composition, minority status, languages, housing type and transportation.

Brooklyn, the city's most populous borough, currently has a 7.62% COVID-19 positivity rate over a seven day average.

"The goal of establishing these joint federal pilot centers is to continue to expand the rate of vaccinations in an efficient, effective and equitable manner, with an explicit focus on making sure that communities with a high risk of COVID-19 exposure and infection are not left behind," the release said.

Federal staff will work at the centers, alongside those employed by the state and local government.
