The Week in Crime: Spotlight on Fort Greene/Clinton Hill

Overall, crime is down in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, and in Brooklyn as a whole.

There has been a 59.1% reduction in crime reported to Fort Greene/Clinton Hill's 88th Precinct during the week Dec. 28 to Jan. 3, compared to the same period last year.

There have been nine incidents reported, including felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto. There have been no murders, rapes or robberies reported this year in the neighborhood. During the same period last year, there had been five robberies.

Looking at the 28-day cycle, there has been a 38.6% reduction in incident reports this year on last.

The most common incident reported so far has been felony assault, with four reports in the neighborhood, the same number as this time last year.

On Thursday, the 88th Precinct tweeted about a car stop conducted by officers, where a gun was found.

Across Brooklyn:

Across the borough, there have been 520 incidents reported between Dec. 28 and Jan. 3, according to NYPD's CompStat, including three murders -- two in Brooklyn North and one in Brooklyn South. There have been eight reported rapes across Brooklyn, 80 robberies and 111 felony assaults.

By Jan 3., there were 352 violent crimes reported, 704 property crimes and 32 sex crimes. Data collected by NYPD shows violent crimes in the borough typically occur between 4pm and 5am and high time for property crimes is between 10am and 10pm.

In the headlines:

This week, 29-year-old Khari Covington was arrested for a violent attack on a woman at a Bushwick smoke shop. Covington has also been charged with a spate of attacks on women at the Morgan Avenue subway station between November and January.

On Wednesday, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez filed a 77-count indictment and a separate 11-count indictment taking down alleged gang members in Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. More than 15 young men face various charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, weapons possession and a litany of others.

A 22-year-old man was arrested after allegedly killing his grandfather with a machete and slashing his 4-year-old sister and another relative. The man allegedly got into an argument with his family members before committing the crime on Bed-Stuy's Putnam Ave. NYPD said the man has confessed to the crime.

In Brownsville, a man who was shot by NYPD officers after allegedly driving a stolen van at them is facing assault charges. The alleged theft occurred at Georgia Ave. at Pitkin Ave. just before 9pm on Wednesday night.
