At court and in professional conferences, she has often found herself one of the few transgender women working on litigation or pressing for national change. She recently became the first transgender person on a Brooklyn community board.

"If I'm the first trans person [on the City Council], then that's fantastic," she told the Daily News. "But what I really at the end of the day want to focus on is uplifting the voices of the most marginalized in our community and making sure they actively have a say in what goes on in city government."
