The Department of Health will be spraying several neighborhoods in Brooklyn with pesticides Thursday in order to reduce the mosquito population and prevent the risk of diseases such as West Nile virus. Similar efforts have taken place in Staten Island and Queens in recent weeks.

The city plans to send trucks out from 8:30pm Thursday night to 6:00am the next morning and will spray parts of Prospect Heights, in addition to other neighborhoods surrounding Prospect Park. In the event of rain, it will be postponed until the following Thursday.

The department has stated that, although the pesticides DeltaGard and Anvil pose little risk to humans and pets, they advise residents to stay indoors during the spraying and to wash any skin or clothing that may have been exposed using water and soap. In addition, some people may experience eye or throat irritation or rash, particularly those with respiratory conditions. Residents do not need to turn off their air conditioners.

According to the DOH, the exact parameters of the area where the pesticides are being spread are:

  • Fourth Avenue to the West
  • Atlantic Avenue to the North
  • Classon Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Flatbush Avenue to the East
  • Parkside Avenue, Ocean Parkway, Fort Hamilton Parkway, Dahill Road, 45th Street, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and, 39th Street to the South.
