City Designates Additional Prospect Heights Block for Outdoor Dining

Another block of Vanderbilt Ave will be closed to cars and buses on the weekends for the city's Open Streets program
Outdoor Dining’s Return Welcomed By Bed-Stuy Restaurants

Mayor Bill De Blasio announced Friday that an additional block of Vanderbilt Ave in Prospect Heights will be closed to traffic on the weekends in order to allow restaurants more room for outdoor dining, reports Patch. This is one of 21 new locations that will be added to the city's Open Streets program.

While Vanderbilt Ave has already been closed to traffic on the weekends between Park Place and Pacific Street, the new plan is to close an additional block to the north between Pacific and Atlantic Ave.

"New Yorkers have sacrificed so much during this crisis," stated De Blasio in a press release addressing the program, "and they deserve the opportunity to safely enjoy their neighborhoods and communities."

This announcement comes after the city decided not to move forward with its plan to resume indoor dining due to COVID-19 surges in other parts of the country.

Open Streets will be extended through at least October 31. Under the program, restaurants are allowed to remain open outdoors from 5:00pm to 11:00pm on Fridays and from 12:00pm to 11:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

In addition, they are only permitted to serve alcohol to patrons who are seated and ordering food.
