Award-winning Director Spike Lee will join the American Film Institute (AFI) movie club to talk about his timeless Brooklyn classic Do The Right Thing on Thursday night.
The movie has been selected as AFI and Universal Pictures movie of the week, and will be streamed free for the week on a variety of platforms, Rolling Stone reports. Do The Right Thing is a fitting choice during a time of mass protests against systemic racism, as it documents simmering racial tensions between an Italian-American family and local Black residents in historically Black neighborhood, Bed-Stuy.
"What we're seeing today is not new," Lee told CNN. "We've seen this again and again and again, and people are asking the same questions: 'Why are people rioting? Why are people doing this?' Because people are fed up and people are tired of the debasing, the killing of black bodies. That's what this country is built upon."
In May, Lee released short film 3 Brothers that mixed a scene from Do The Right Thing with footage of the police killings of George Floyd and Eric Garner.
AFI's President Bob Gazzale said the film was a timeless and timely classic, and Lee had forever proven himself as, "the voice for change we need now more than ever."
The conversation with Lee will be streamed live at 8 p.m. on AFI's Youtube channel, and the movie will be streaming free through June 29, on a number of platforms including Amazon, Apple, DirecTV and Google.
