New York City will enter phase 2 of reopening on Monday with the relaxing of some coronavirus restrictions, Governor Cuomo announced.
Cuomo said after the city's months-long shut down and two weeks of phase 1 reopening measures, it was on track to move to phase 2, NBC New York reported. Phase 2 would allow outdoor dining at restaurants, and the reopening of retail stores and hair salons, and more. It would also include the reopening of playgrounds and pools, at the mayor's discretion.
However, a spokesperson from the mayor's office told NBC New York the reopening date was not definitive, and the office was watching health indicators to make sure the decision was made smartly. De Blasio has previously said the city would enter phase 2 in early July.
"We're all mindful that we had a very unusual situation with the protests. We're going to see, we believe the fuller impact if any, of the protests in terms of our health indicators around this weekend, maybe into the first few days of next week," de Blasio said. "We'll also see the impact of Phase I itself, obviously, which is much bigger than the protests in the sense of several hundred thousand people each day going back to work every day for the full workday."
Cuomo said the metrics being used in New York City were the same being used across the state, and they were shown to be accurate and effective. "We don't change the rules for New York City, for Long Island -- it's one set of rules for everyone," Cuomo said.
