Hispanic and Black New York City residents are dying from COVID-19 at rates above their share of the city's population, according to preliminary data from the NYC Department of Health.

Even statewide, Blacks accounted for 19 percent of COVID-19 deaths — more than twice their 9 percent share of the population, according to nearly complete data from the State Health Department.

On Friday, May 22, U.S. Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8), Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Grace Meng (NY-6) will hold a virtual town hall with AARP representatives Beth Finkel, AARP New York State Director; and AARP New York Associate State Directors for Multicultural Engagement Reggie Nance and Maggie Castro, to discuss the effects of COVID-19 on the health of older New Yorkers of color.

During the town hall, Representatives Meng, Jeffries and Espaillat will provide an update on how elected officials are addressing health disparities in their communities and the latest in the federal government's efforts to combat the pandemic, and take questions from AARP members around the state.

Also, AARP will poll participants on what they see as the top disparities during the pandemic. Residents and health care workers are welcome to join and weigh in.
