How to Avoid or Get Around Emergencies While Moving

Moving requires planning, packing and patience. And even then, emergencies can occur. Here's what to consider.
Traffic Jams

When you get a job promotion or just want a change of scenery in your life, you may need to move from one part of the country to another. This requires careful planning, packing and patience. And even then, there are possibilities for emergencies to occur while you're moving.

You Aren't Finished Packing Your Belongings

Moving-day emergencies occur more often than you might think, and one of the most common is to not be finished packing when it's time for you to leave. If you've got to be at your destination in 48 hours and you're only halfway done with your packing, you'll probably start to get frustrated and wonder how you're going to get to your new home on time.

Fortunately, you can avoid this emergency by taking the time to plan and move forward with your packing long before the day you need to move, especially if you're supposed to start a new job. It's important to make a good impression and being late would not be the way that you'd want to start your first day.

Bad Weather Can Change Moving Plans Quickly

After you set out on the road and have a plan of action in place, you may think that your moving worries are all taken care of. However, the problem with this type of thinking is that you have left one important factor out of the equation. You can never know how the weather is going to act. For example, if your new location is 2000 miles away and you're traveling over a mountain pass, you may not even think about the type of weather you might encounter when you're traveling at a high elevation. You may run into a snowstorm and have to spend the night in a hotel during a forced stop that you weren't expecting. If you encounter a mountain pass that isn't safe to travel over, it can create an emergency that stops your moving plans fast.

Your Moving Company Causes Damage

Another moving issue that can put a damper on your plans is if the moving company damages your critical appliances, racking up unexpected repair bills. When these unexpected emergencies occur, online payday loans may be an option if you don't have enough savings to cover it. It's always nice to have money stashed away to cover the cost, before considering borrowing money from a lender or someone close to you. However, it's good to know that there are options in times of unexpected financial strain, if you really do need the help.

Flat Tires and Mechanical Problems

When you're working with mechanical equipment like a moving van or your automobile, there's always the possibility that you could end up with a flat tire or mechanical problem. This would not be good if you are traveling across the country to a new home. It's important to make sure that you have a spare tire handy for all of the vehicles that you'll be using, and you'll also need to know how to change a flat tire if this emergency occurs while you're moving. Fortunately, flat tires can usually be fixed by changing them. If you have a mechanical problem, you may need to call a tow truck and have them assist you. You won't be the first or the last person to have your moving van towed to a mechanic.

Traffic Jams

If you've ever traveled to a big city, you probably appreciate the times when you can go the speed limit on a highway that doesn't have many other vehicles traveling beside you. If you've ever been caught in a traffic jam, you know how slow and monotonous they can be. If you are trying to follow a strict schedule and end up in this type of mess, it can quickly change your progress and create a large roadblock that you can't get through easily. This can create an emergency if you've already lined up where you'll be staying during your moving journey. You might have to reschedule everything if you get stuck in horrendous traffic.

Driving Accidents

One of the worst emergencies that can occur while you're moving is having a driving accident. It's always best if you can take your time and not get stressed about traffic or getting behind when you're trying to follow a schedule. If you can drive defensively and pay attention to other vehicles on the road, it will help you avoid ending up in a fender bender that stops your progress immediately. It's always best if you can do most of your traveling on the freeway, which usually doesn't have the start and stop bursts that you can encounter when driving in the city. This provides a safer route.

While there is always the chance that an emergency can occur when you're moving, it's best to take it in stride and do what you can if one occurs. Planning can help as well as being prepared and driving safe.
