In June 2019, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed off on a package of laws that made it more difficult for landlords to take apartments out of rent-regulated status and raise rents by as much as 20 percents once tenants moved.
Fortunately, according to city data, the law has been working: Evictions rates are down nearly 20 percent citywide.
Now, the New York City Council is proposing two bills co-sponsored by Councilmember Robert Cornegy, Jr. -- Intros 1104 and 1529-- which would strengthen tenants' rights even further.
On Saturday, January 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Restoration Plaza, Cornegy will host a tenants' rights and resources meeting. IMPACCT Brooklyn, Fair Housing Justice Center, HRA Tenant Support, Mayor's Public Engagement Unit, Public Utility Law Project, NYPD 79th Precinct, and more will be in attendance.
Other topics covered during the meeting will include tenant displacement, income discrimination, tenant protections, rights for utility consumers, and illegal evictions.
Local residents and landlords will have a chance to weigh in on their specific issues and get answers to questions around the newly proposed laws.
