State Senator Kevin Parker, in partnership with the NYC Department of Finance, is hosting the next installment of his monthly Homeowner Outreach and Tenant Enrollment series on Wednesday, July 24 at Brooklyn Public Library's central branch in Prospect Heights.

During the event, Brooklynites will learn about city and state programs that can help manage their cost of housing. Specialists on site will inform homeowners about available programs that could provide them with relief on their property taxes, while senior tenants may qualify and apply for a rent freeze. DOF staff will be on hand to help with the application process.

"I applaud the New York City Department of Finance for their commitment to allocate resources to homeowners and tenants within my district," said Parker. "I am proud to partner with them for this series where we can enroll more eligible participates, and ensure our senior citizens have their rent frozen at an affordable rate. I am thankful to the Brooklyn Public Library for allowing us to use their space and supporting our initiatives."

The homeowners and tenant enrollment event will focus on programs like School Tax Relief (STAR), that provides tax relief to homeowners with an annual income of $500,000 or less, as well E-STAR for senior homeowners age 65 and older with annual incomes of $88,050 or less, among others.

The NYC Rent Freeze Program, which includes the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program and the Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE) Program, helps those eligible stay in affordable housing by freezing their rent. Under this program, a property tax credit covers the difference between the actual rent amount and what the tenant is responsible for paying at the frozen rate.

Tenants, who live in a rent-regulated apartment and spend more than one-third of their income on rent, may qualify for the city's rent freeze program if they are at least 62 years old, or 18 years old with a qualifying disability, and have a household income of $50,000 or less.

The Homeowner Outreach and Tenant Enrollment event will take place on Wednesday, July 24, 1:00pm - 3:00pm at the Info Commons Room of the Brooklyn Public Library at 10 Grand Army Plaza.
