"School is out, summer fun is in," announced the CityParks Foundation Tuesday, rolling out its summer sports program.

Beginning July 1, parks across Brooklyn including Betsy Head Park, Fort Greene Park and St. John's Park, will give Brooklyn youth the opportunity to stay active and healthy while showcasing and refining their athletic abilities. Free and open to all children from ages 6-17, the programs include track and field, tennis and golf.

CityParks' track and field program, presented in partnership with New York Road Runners, gives kids, ages 5 to 17, the chance to learn the basics of the sport. From hurdles and relay races to long jump, shot put and javelin throw, this program runs from July 1 through August 8, culminating with a citywide track meet. Brooklyn kids can participate at Betsy Head Park and Wingate Park.

From July through August, tennis pros will be on hand to transfer their love of the game, using fun exercises and drills to help teach kids the basics of tennis and discover a sport for life. The program also promotes physical fitness while building self-confidence. Classes are for all skill levels, and host weekly competitions and special events for intermediate-level players.

In Central Brooklyn, tennis classes are available at Fort Greene Park, Lincoln Terrace Park, Jackie Robinson Park and Prospect Park. CityParks provides equipment for those who do not have a tennis racket.

CityParks' golf program teaches kids how to play golf and experience the many positive life skills learned by the game from July 1 through August 21. The summer program for beginners transforms local neighborhood ball fields, like the one at St. John's Park in Crown Heights, into driving ranges and practice greens to introduce the basic skills of the game.

After completing the introductory program, all are invited to continue to learn and play at local public golf courses and at the CityParks Junior Golf Center in Brooklyn or at the Golf Center Annex in Queens. Free use of equipment is available for all participants.
