Friends of Fort Greene Park are invited to wine and dine under the stars during the Second Annual Fort Greene Park Fling on Saturday, June 15. The $45 admission's ticket will support one of Central Brooklyn's largest green spaces and its free, year-round community programs.
"The Fort Greene Park Fling will provide critical support for our work and programs in a way that honors our neighborhood's unique character," said Julian Macrone, associate director at Fort Greene Park Conservancy. "FGPC is proud of our 20-plus year history advocating for Fort Greene Park and ensuring all our neighbors can benefit from it year-round through free programs. Most people don't know that the more than 150 events we produce every year are only possible because of our neighbors' support."
This year's event features swinging Jazz from neighborhood legend Eric Frazier, dancing and a silent auction. The park will provide the setting -- a lively gathering with the Prison Ship Martyr Monument glowing in the foreground and the sunset over Brooklyn and Manhattan's skylines as a backdrop. Guests can pack their own dinner, or pre-order meals and drinks provided by local purveyors like Greene Grape Provisions and Gnarly Vines wine shop, plus on-site grilling from sustainable eatery Mett?.
First designated a park by the City of Brooklyn in 1847, Fort Greene Park is one of America's most storied neighborhood parks. A verdant 30-acre jewel at the edge of Downtown Brooklyn, the park's history dates back to its use as a post of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The FGPC preserves the park's function as the area's primary green space and enhances the culturally diverse Fort Greene community by anchoring the park as the hub of neighborhood social gatherings through year-round programming.
As in previous year, the Fling will celebrate the contributions of neighbors who build and support community in Fort Greene by naming a new class of Community Heroes, who will be honored with a photo installation in the park.
Initiated by Brooklyn-based art project Community Heroes NYC, the exhibition tells the stories of those everyday local residents who impact their communities, and who too often go unmentioned and remain unseen; their banners will remain on display in the park for one year.
"We want our events to bring together individuals from every corner of Fort Greene and beyond who care about our park, and know inclusivity is key to building a strong community," said Macrone.
