Pretty in Pink: Bklyn Cherry Blossom Festival Delights with Music, Food -- and Blooms!

The annual festival celebrates all things Japanese with an exciting program of contemporary and traditional performances and activities.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden's trees were in full bloom this past weekend, right on time for the 38th Sakura Matsuri, the garden's annual cherry blossom extravaganza.

The festival, which attracts close to 60,000 visitors from near and far every year, celebrates all things Japanese with an exciting program of contemporary and traditional performances and activities.

Sheer endless rows of bright pink blooms greeted the guests upon entering the garden's Cherry Esplanade who then either camped out on blankets under the trees or sauntered between various stages to enjoy Far Eastern pop, rock, jazz or electro sounds, traditional dances and drumming, or even samurai sword performances.

Festival revelers could also participate in traditional tea ceremonies, visit an origami atelier, learn about the basics of Bonsai tree care or indulge their playful site with traditional Japanese games like Go, Karuta and Shogi chess.

Various demonstrations celebrated the many facets of Japanese culture, from calligraphy to martial arts, and the Japanese artist village welcomed dozens of vendors selling books, art and handcrafted goods such as wooden Kokeshi dolls, traditional Tenugui towels, confections and chocolates.

If you missed this beautiful spring celebration, take a look at our photos. And if you hurry, you may still catch some late-blooming cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
