Construction for a new 500-foot tower to rise behind the Barclays Center and Atlantic Terminal in Prospect Heights is about to begin, announced developers Greenland Forest City Partners and The Brodsky Organization on Tuesday.
The residential building will be the newest and largest addition to the 22-acre mixed-use mega-development Pacific Park. The tower, rising at the corner of Atlantic and 6th Avenues, is expected to bring 859 units of mixed-income housing, including 258 affordable units, to the area formerly known as Atlantic Yards.
The tower will be designed by Perkins Eastman Architects and is expected to be completed by 2022.
"As we accelerate development at Pacific Park, this groundbreaking at 18 Sixth Avenue will be a significant step towards fulfilling our promise to develop a world-class neighborhood in the heart of Brooklyn," said Scott Solish, executive vice president of Development at Greenland Forest City Partners.
The Brodsky Organization is also partnering with Greenland Forrest City Partners for a second project at 664 Pacific street, which will include a mixed-income rental residential building, expanded open space and a new public school.
To date, Pacific Park has opened four residential buildings: 550 Vanderbilt, a luxury condominium; 535 Carlton and 38 Sixth, two 100 percent affordable rental buildings offering nearly 600 rental units; and 461 Dean, the tallest modular building in the world.
Upon completion, Pacific Park will have created 15 buildings with 6,430 apartments— including 2,250 mandatory affordable units, — commercial spaces for local businesses such as the ceramics studio BKLYN CLAY, Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream and a new New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital branch at 38 Sixth Ave, as well as eight acres of publicly accessible open space.
