The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium is gearing up to celebrate its 20th anniversary season with a series of musical and artistic events in Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and Clinton Hill.
The 2019 season, titled Music of The Spirit Series, highlights emerging musicians and their innovative styles that will envision the next 20 years of Brooklyn jazz, organizers said, while also honoring those who have adorned the jazz stage for the past decades.
"CBJC is delighted to celebrate this 20th year of preserving, promoting and supporting live music within the underserved communities of Brooklyn," said CBJC Chairman Clarence Mosley. "Our vision for the next 20 years is to inspire young and emerging musicians to continue the jazz tradition while creating jazz that appeals to today's audiences and generations to come."
Founded in 1999 by Alma Carroll, Viola Plummer and Torrie McCartney, the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium is a collective of local jazz aficionados, entertainment venues, musicians, faith-based institutions and community organizations committed to developing and nurturing local audiences and institutions, and providing a forum for cultural exchange while preserving the cultural heritage of jazz.
Throughout the spring and summer, the CBJC will present several site performances and opportunities for the community to embrace the monumental tradition of jazz from a local and global perspective.
The season will kick off with Out of the Collective featuring pianist and MacArthur genius Jason Moran and jazz legends Reggie Workman, Buster Williams and Lenny White at Sista's Place in Bedford Stuyvesant on Saturday, February 16.
Other highlights include the annual Jazz: The Women's Viewpoint tribute which pays homage to female vocalists and musicians on March 20; the Youth Jazz Jamboree and Wellness Day on May 11; as well as the Jazz Hall of Fame, the annual ceremony immortalizing notable Brooklyn musicians, at RestorationART on June 19.
The 20th-anniversary celebration will also be accompanied with a special exhibit of Brooklyn's Jazz Heroes, which will open on June 5, at RestorationART.
