There are four distinct income bands that qualify for affordable housing at Van Sinderen Plaza: 30, 40, 50 and 60 percent of the area median income, which translates to annual incomes ranging between $16,629 to $72,600.

A 50 percent preference will be given to residents currently residing in Brooklyn Community Board 5. Five percent of the units are set aside for mobility-disabled applicants, and 2 percent are reserved for candidates with vision- or hearing-disabilities.

Prospective tenants have until December 28, 2018, to apply. Applications can be filled out online at "Housing Connect" or requested by mail.

After the deadline, applications are selected for review through a lottery process. If an application is selected and it fulfills the requirements, the applicant then will be invited to an interview which is usually scheduled from two to ten months after the application deadline. The applicant will then have to present documents that verify household size, the identity of household members and household income.

If the application is approved, the applicant will be matched to an apartment.
