The Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) has launched a new art competition titled Distinction: Street Banner Art and invites local visual artists to submit their artwork.

Artists are encouraged to create art inspired by the competition's theme Distinction, the excellence that sets someone or something apart from others, and the community the Flatbush Avenue BID serves. Situated in the heart of Flatbush, the neighborhood boasts a high concentration of people of Caribbean heritage with a vibrant mix of retail and restaurants.

"This heritage is something unique to be celebrated as it adds to the Brooklyn flavor," the BID says.

Selected applications will enter into the first phase of the competition, a pop-gallery, during which the artworks will be displayed in participating businesses throughout the BID. The public, in conjunction with a panel of judges, will vote for the finalists.

The second and last phase will be the grand unveiling of the finalists' artworks which will appear on sponsored street banners across the Flatbush Avenue BID for an entire year.

Artists can submit their application online until Wednesday, October 31. The selected artists will be notified shortly after to prepare for the pop-up gallery which will take place from November, 16 to December, 17. The final unveiling of the winning artwork is slated for March 2019.
