Acclaimed poet, novelist, activist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker will read from her new book Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart at the Brooklyn Museum on Friday, October 12.
Presented in both English and Spanish, Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart is a collection of nearly 70 poems that reflect on our current political times while chronicling Walker's life.
From poems of painful self-inquiry to celebrating the simple beauty of baking frittatas, Walker offers a window into her world of activism, love, hope and gratitude. Whether she's urging us to preserve an urban paradise or behold the delicate necessity of beauty to the spirit, Walker encourages us to honor the divine that lives inside all of us.
In 1983, Walker made history as the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature as well as the National Book Award for The Color Purple which served as inspiration for Spielberg's 1985 film and a Broadway adaption in 2005. She has written seven novels, four collections of short stories, four children's books, and volumes of essays and poetry. Walker's works have been translated into more than two dozen languages and sold more than 15 million copies.
The program includes a reading by Alice Walker, followed by a Q&A and a book signing.
