The Brooklyn Peace Concert, aiming to promote an end to gun violence, will feature Grammy Award-winning artist Andrea Martin, comedian Majah Hype and Power 105s DJ Norie

In light of the gun violence that has marred Brooklyns JOuvert Parade in recent years, Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley and District Leader Geoffrey Davis are inviting to the second annual Love Yourself, Brooklyn Peace concert on Tuesday, August 21 at Plenty’s Paradise in Flatbush.

Hosted by comedian Majah Hype, the free public concert will feature live performances by Grammy award-winning R&B artist Andrea Martin who penned hit songs for artists like Melanie Fiona, Monica, Toni Braxton, Angie Stone and Leona Lewis; dancer-turned-rapper Jennaske who has gained notoriety for her moves in music videos for A$AP Ferg and Remy Ma, and who released her debut single “IDK” in 2017; and underground rapper Pappa Pretty of  the TI and Tiny show. Power 105s DJ Norie will keep the music flowing throughout the afternoon.

I am thrilled to be coming together with District Leader Geoffrey Davis, the James E. Davis Stop the Violence Foundation, my colleagues and the NYPD to bring back the Love Yourself Peace Concert for its second year in an effort to promote the culture and positivity of what JOuvert is all about, said Mosley. It is a tragedy that the JOuvert celebration has become synonymous with violence.

JOuvert, the annual predawn street party preceding the West Indian Day Parade, has been plagued by violence in recent years. In 2016, two individuals were fatally killed by a gunman who opened fire into a crowd of people. The year before, 45-year-old Carey Gabay, a lawyer in Governor Andrew Cuomos administration, was fatally shot.

Mosley and Davis launched the free concert last year in an effort to promote peace and positivity leading up to J’Ouvert. Additionally, in an effort to cut down on violence and gang activity, last year JOuverts organizers held their street party during the day and implemented stricter screening processes.

It is so important that we place educating our youth and reaching out to the community at the forefront of our work to ensure a safe JOuvert, said Mosley. This concert is an opportunity to continue advocating for safety and cultural awareness, and music is the great unifier in our effort to promote peace and love this JOuvert season.

The free “Love Yourself Peace Concert will be held at Plenty’s Paradise at 992 Rogers Ave in Crown Heights on Tuesday, August 21, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
