The city is rolling out the first parking meter rate increases in five years and Brooklyn will be up first.
The city is gearing up to implement the first parking meter rate hikes in five years -- and it will begin next month in Brooklyn, announced the Department of Transportation (DOT). The amount of the increase will vary by location within the city and depend upon meter type, commercial versus passenger.
In Brooklyn core areas rates will double from $1.00 per hour to $2.00 per hour, while neighborhood corridors will go up from $1.00 per hour to $1.50 per hour; less-traveled areas will see a 25-cent increase per hour. These rates will also apply in the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.
Brooklynites who plan to travel to Manhattan by car will need to bring extra change for the meters. In Manhattan's core sections, defined as the areas of lower Manhattan and Midtown to 59th Street, meters will increase from $3.50 per hour to $4.50 for the first hour and $7.50 for the second. Commercial meters will increase by $2, starting at $6 for the first hour.
The new rate adjustments will roll out as follows:
- Brooklyn: September 4
- Manhattan: October 1
- Queens: November 1
- Bronx: December 3
- Staten Island: December 3
