Healthy Start Brooklyn is hosting a free workshop on fatherhood and men's health on Monday, July 30, in Bedford Stuyvesant. The roundtable discussion invites dads to have an open exchange about the state of mental and emotional health amongst men of color and the importance of self-care.

"It is unfortunate is that we as men have been programmed to suffer in silence and deal with our issued in toxic ways until the outcome is irreparable damage to ourselves and the people that surround us," said Jomael Young, Fatherhood Program coordinator at Healthy Start Brooklyn. "With a workshop like Men's Health, I hope to provide an opportunity for dads and men to hear each other's challenges and success when it comes to health mentally, physically and emotionally."

Attendees can expect an opportunity to hear and speak in an informal atmosphere about their lives and experiences as being fathers, partners and men in today's society. Young will lead the conversation, provide additional information such as statistics on men's health and present ways how men can nurture their mental health.

While this is a monthly event, for now, Young's hopes to establish a weekly session.

"Unfortunately, we as men have been shaped by our societal surroundings to be strong and silent pillars," said Young. "My goal is to create a weekly group for men to have an opportunity to get together and speak their minds."

The event is free and RSVPs are not required. However, early arrival is suggested as space is limited. For more information, contact Jyoung4@health.nyc.gov.
