The Noel Pointer Foundation (NPF), the Bedford Stuyvesant-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children through music, is readying for its Summer Strings Program and is hosting an open house on Saturday, June 16.

The Summer String Program 2018, which will take place from July 2 to August 3, is still open for registrations. Interested students can choose between private lessons ranging from 30- 60 minutes, week-long programs or enroll in a 5-week camp. With the exception of the private classes, all lessons are taught in a group setting, allowing for students to form long-lasting musical friendships with peers while refining individual skills and learning fundamental music theory concepts. Group lessons are formed according to students' ages and abilities.

Additionally, students participating in the Summer Strings Program will have the opportunity to go on fun and educational field trips every Friday. In the past, kids explored the Bronx Zoo, the Louis Armstrong Museum or the NY Transit Museum. At the conclusion of the program, all students will perform what they have learned throughout the summer.

Founded in 1995, the foundation honors the legacy of the late Grammy-nominated jazz violinist and arts education advocate Noel W. Pointer by providing string music instruction in New York City public and charter schools, as well as after-school, Saturday and summer programs. Noel W. Pointer believed that learning to play a string instrument is a transformative experience that advances children's lives. Since its inception, the foundation has served over 30,000 students citywide.
