With Brooklyn Museum's David Bowie is in full swing, and a host of borough-wide events accompanying the exhibit, the late icon is definitely omnipresent. And now, Kings Theatre just announced another highlight: Lazarus, the stage musical written by David Bowie and Enda Walsh, will be brought to new life at the Flatbush venue on Wednesday, May 2.
For the first time and one night only, the off-Broadway musical will return as a film, accompanied by the band who first brought the show to life in New York in 2015. Not only will fans be able to see the show, a taping of the musical's London production, on the big screen - they will have the unique experience of seeing the film with the soundtrack played in its entirety by the seven-piece band that was handpicked by Bowie.
Lazarus, inspired by Walter Tevis's novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, starred Michael C. Hall as Thomas Jerome Newton, the character Bowie portrayed in the 1976 film adaptation of that book. Lazarus tells the story of Thomas Newton, a 'man' unable to die and who thus remains still on Earth, spending his days with his head soaked in gin and haunted by a past love - until he meets another lost soul which might set him finally free.
The original Lazarus band is comprised of musical director/arranger/keyboardist and producer of the album Henry Hey, keyboardist/guitarist JJ Appleton, drummer Brian Delaney, saxophonist Lucas Dodd, bassist Fima Ephron, trombonist Karl Lyden and guitarist Chris McQueen. They will reunite at Kings Theatre to perform a nearly-20-song set to accompany the on-screen performances by the Lazarus London cast members including Michael C. Hall, Amy Lennos as Elly, Sophia Anne Caruso as Girl, Michael Esper as Valentine and Jamie Muscato as Ben.
The soundtrack, personally rearranged by Bowie, includes singles such as Heroes, Changes, Life On Mars?, as well as deep cuts like Crashing in the Same Car, It's No Game (Part 1), Dirty Boys and the four songs written specifically for the show: Lazarus, No Plan, Killing a Little Time and When I Met You - Bowie's last pieces.
Directed by Ivo Van Hove and produced by Robert Fox, Lazarus opened first on December 7, 2015, at the New York Theatre Workshop to great critical acclaim - and sold out almost immediately. Therefore...don't waste time, Bowie fans!
