Ready your capes, comic and superhero fans –  the Black Comics Collective presents the BAM Black Comix Expo on Saturday, February 11. The day-long event features comic exhibitors, a panel discussion, a children’s art workshop and a superhero cosplay to celebrate diversity and representation across sci-fi and fantasy genres by presenting a range of acclaimed independent comic writers and illustrators, as well as the freshest emerging talent.

Founded in 2017 by Deirdre Hollman, the Black Comics Collective celebrates cultural diversity in comics and seeks to amplify awareness of creators, writers, illustrators and publishers who are producing independent comics that depict a dynamic range of global black experiences, aesthetics and social issues in both earthly and other-worldly realms. The Black Comics Collective convenes black comic creators and the communities that crave them via live and digital events including bi-monthly meet-ups, author/illustrator talks, educational presentations, festivals and conventions, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops and pop-up shops.

The Black Comix Expo will kick off with a childrens workshop teaching young artists the art of drawing, followed by a panel about the Defenders of Justice and conclude with a cosplay showcase. For a detailed schedule go here.

In anticipation of the release of Marvel’s Black Panther, BAM presents the Black Comix Expo in conjunction with BAMs cinema series Fight The Power: Black Superheroes on Film. The 28-film series, which takes place from Friday, February 2 through Sunday, February 18, celebrates the cinematic history of black screen heroes who challenged establishment power structures through their sheer existence and include anything from Blaxploitation icons to supernatural avengers to anti-colonial outlaws.
