NY Women's Chamber of Commerce to Host Free M/WBE Workshop at Bklyn Library

The workshop will instruct M/WBEs how to register a business with different government entities, to identify government contracting opportunities and to market a business to government agencies

The New York Women's Chamber of Commerce (NYWCC) is hosting a workshop for minority- and women-owned business enterprises at the Brooklyn Public Library on Thursday, January 25. The two-hour long workshop is designed to help M/WBEs to learn how to grow their business through government contracting with city and state agencies.

A recent report released by Comptroller Scott Stringer found that since 2014, the city has made tangible progress in awarding contracts to M/WBEs, thanks to designating funding and personnel to oversee the M/WBE program. In 2017, more companies registered as M/WBEs, increasing the total number to 5,259; more M/WBEs received city contracts; and the city increased its overall spending with M/WBEs from $463.5 million in 2015 to $1.037 billion in 2017.

Yet, the report also shows: From the $21 billion the city spent for products and services contracted to outside vendors, just $1 billion was spent with M/WBEs — to date, M/WBEs have been granted less than five percent of city contracts. With an ambitious goal of awarding 30 percent of city contracts to minority- and women-owned businesses by 2021, the city has been working on legislation to ensure equal access and opportunities for these enterprises.

Nonprofits like NYWCC  assist women and minorities achieve success and economic independence through small business ownership and self-employment. The organization advocates for and works to create equal and fair business opportunities for M/W/BEs.

Thursday's workshop will instruct entrepreneurs and contractors how to understand contract sizes, to determine the right small business program for the individual's business, to register a business with different government entities, to identify government contracting opportunities and how to market a business to the government.
