"We are holding this Yemen event because Americans have a responsibility to oppose their government's support for the war against Yemen," said Charlotte Phillips, M.D., chair of Brooklyn For Peace. "Our defense industry, selling hundreds of millions of dollars of weapons and munitions to Saudi Arabia, is reaping huge profits. But people in Yemen are paying with their lives and well-being."

One of the poorest countries on earth, Yemen has long suffered from wars and destabilization. In 2015, a war broke out when Houthi rebels took over the government. Saudi Arabia began bombing the country, as they saw in the Houthis an ally of their enemy, Iran. According to Brooklyn for Peace, the Saudi air strikes have killed more than 10,000 civilians. The war has left the country on the brink of famine; fighting a cholera epidemic affecting more than a million people, and struggling to treat those affected by disease and hunger as the Saudis have imposed blockades, keeping food and medicine from reaching the country.

Brooklyn for Peace, Karin Malpede, Kathleen Chalfant, BK Reader, Ibraham Qatabi, Action Against Hunger, Amnesty International New York, Mohamad Eldebek, Hadi Eldebek, Yemen, Sherine Tadros,
Hadi Eldebek, with his brother Mohammad, will perform regional Arabic music

The event is free and open to the public. Brooklyn For Peace asks for contributions to benefit the people of Yemen; all proceeds collected will be directed to Action Against Hunger, a humanitarian relief organization that acts to provide food and clean water in areas around the world that are suffering from wars and the devastation that follows.
