With the recent revelations about NYCHA's failure to conduct thousands of lead paint inspections, Senator Jesse Hamilton announced a partnership with Kamin Health Urgent Care in Crown Heights to offer free lead testing for children throughout the month of January.

"It is critically important to take action against lead poisoning on the ground in our neighborhoods and through legislation in Albany," said Hamilton in a statement.

As health experts report: No known level of lead exposure is considered safe. Lead produces a variety of injuries to which children are particularly susceptible as they are still developing. Early exposure to lead can impact children in irreversible ways including harming school performance and changing behavior with serious, lifelong consequences.

In December, Hamilton introduced legislation that would require young children entering New York City schools to be tested for lead exposure. Additionally, the senator's proposed bill would require the school district to publish materials to explain the lead testing process, what the results mean and how parents can get help for a child with elevated blood lead levels.

"Given the seriousness of this problem, we need to unite as a community to ensure that all of our children are safe," Hamilton concluded.

Concerned parents, who would like to have their children tested for lead poisoning, can visit the Kamin Urgent Care center, located at 555 Lefferts Avenue, during the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:00 am to 10:00 pm;
  • Saturday: 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm;
  • Sunday: 9:00 am t0 10:00 pm.
