Dr. Brenda M. Greene, chair of the English department and executive director of the Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College was honored at the 45th Anniversary Celebration of the Brooklyn Oldtimers Foundation Inc. (BOF) on Sunday, December 10. Dr. Greene was recognized for her distinguished and sustained leadership of not only the English department but also of the renowned Center for Black Literature, where she has worked for over 30 years.

As the executive director of the Center for Black Literature, Dr. Greene's has led the National Black Writers Conferences (NBWCs), hosted by Medgar Evers College every spring since 1986. Her research and scholarly work include composition, African-American literature and multicultural literature with extensive publications, grants and presentations.

Through the Center for Black Literature, Dr. Greene has consistently pursued her passion for expanding and enriching the public's knowledge and appreciation for the value of Black literature, and the contributions of writers of the African diaspora to the African-American and Western literary culture. The programs sponsored by the Center for Black Literature help to improve students' literacy and to affirm students' self-esteem, identity and cultural awareness. The NBWC provides writers, scholars, students and the general public with opportunities to participate in invigorating panel discussions, roundtable conversations and writers workshops as well as to experience author readings, performances and film screenings.

Dr. Greene was honored by BOF, a nonprofit organization that awards scholarships opportunities to college-bound students from Central Brooklyn High Schools, for the continued and invaluable work she has done in highlighting the accomplishments of some of the most celebrated (and little-known) writers of the African diaspora.

Dr. Greene's work is nowhere near done: The 14th NBWC, themed "Gathering at the Waters: Healing, Legacy, and Activism in Black Literature," will take place from March 22 to March 25, 2018.
