RestorationArt announced yesterday the opening of the application process for the 2018 ChoreoQuest-in-Residence program. ChoreoQuest is known for its award-winning and innovative presentations led by Co-Directors Sabine LaFortune and Nathan Trice who are continually developing opportunities for choreographers. The ChoreoQuest-in-Residence program provides free space, professional development, promotional support, right in the heart of Brooklyn at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration.

"ChoreoQuest fills a critical niche of the dance ecosystem in New York City, providing emerging and accomplished choreographers the opportunity to create, develop and present new works, while also grooming the next generation of youth in African-American dance traditions," said Nathan Trice, co-director of ChoreoQuest. "We are trying to restore what has been broken in communities, specifically African-American communities."

In its 16th year, ChoreoQuest is an artist-in-residence program that provides choreographers of African descent a platform to create thought-provoking, innovative art reflecting the community. Each of the resident artists brings bold innovative perspectives on gender, identity and community that aim to expand ideas on culture and our place within it.

"Art is a way to reflect, engage in and document cultural activities," said Trice. "We come together in a communal way — humans growing together."

As is the cultural centerpiece of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, RestorationArt is a dynamic 21st-century creative complex, dedicated to folding the community into artistic discovery and storytelling in dance, music, theater, visual arts and conversation.

Home to a variety of institutions-in-residence, such as the Billie Holiday Theatre, the Frank Silvera Writers' Workshop, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, Cumbe: The Center for African and Diaspora Dance, the Noel Pointer School of Music and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy, RestorationArt is in the epicenter of Black culture in Central Brooklyn. With its programs and events, which also include music festivals and salons, theater performances, reading series, as well as talks and film screenings, RestorationArt reaches a diverse audience of more than 40,000 each year.

Interested candidates can submit applications until December 15, 2017, to choreoquests@restorationplaza.org.
