A Letter to my Nephew is the latest work from choreographer Bill T. Jones and will be presented as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival on Tuesday, October 3, running through Saturday, October 7. The performance, directed by Jones, is produced in collaboration with New York Live Arts.

A Letter to My Newphew is a deeply personal performance collage featuring nine dancers, creating a portrait of Jones' beloved nephew Lance T. Briggs - a talented dancer who struggled with illness and addiction - against the political landscape of the present.

Composed like a series of postcards sent home from abroad, A Letter to My Nephew launches a swirl of images around Briggs' ever-present hospital bed. Featuring artistic director Janet Wong's art projections, composer Nick Hallett's score and a live performance by renown baritone Matthew Gamble, Jones' cultural critique is rewritten for the time and place of every performance, flashing by each night like an hour of the evening news.

Bill T. Jones is an acclaimed choreographer, artistic director and dancer. He is the co-founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and the artistic director of New York Live Arts, the company's home base and arts center that aims to transcend barriers between and within communities through art and performance. The company has performed worldwide in over 200 cities in 40 countries, and is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance-theater world.

"We are living in a critical moment in which the social, political, cultural tides are changing," states NY Live Arts' website. "These challenging times call on us to convene in a central place devoted to bringing people together in exploration of our common values."
