WHAT: Church of Broken Pieces - Opening Reception- In "Church of Broken Pieces," Theodore presents a body of photographs made on the streets of Philadelphia's African American neighborhoods, many of which are endangered by gentrification. The exhibition, named after a church close to Theodore's childhood home, explores the psychic, physical and technological translocation of black America. WHAT: Brooklyn Book Festival - Where should we start? The festival is enormous with more than 300 national and international writers of fiction and nonfiction, poetry and graphic novels who will participate in panels, readings and other creative performances on 14 stages around Brooklyn Borough Hall. This year's impressive list of authors include Karl Ove Knausgård, Joyce Carol Oates, Colson Whitehead, Jacqueline Woodson, Jonathan Lethem, Claire Messud, Chris Hayes, Carolyn Forché, Sarah Dessen, Alexandra Bracken, Thi Bui, Lynn Nottage, Hisham Matar, Maira Kalman - and many, many more! WHAT: JAPANFes Ramen Contest 2017 - Gather your ramen-squad and hit up the first Brooklyn Ramen contest ever! The contest will be held street fair-style at Myrtle Avenue, between Wyckoff Ave and St Nicholas Av, around the corner from the Myrtle Wykoff Avenue subway station. According to the organizers, this will be the best ramen contest ever because it features previous award winners, ramen restaurants straight from Japan and a total of 15 kind of ramen. There will also be live music by Japanese recording artists Kohei and Tia. And if you wish, you can dance, too.
