New Yorkers were asked, and they spoke: Spike Lee's "Crooklyn" is the chosen winner of the city's "One Film, One New York" competition, a fun initiative to bring film-loving New Yorkers together by watching one great movie at the same time. Spike Lee's classic will be screened citywide on September 13 - for free.

As part of the "One Film, One New York" initiative of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, New Yorkers were invited to cast their vote for one of five movies, preselected by NY Times film critics. The five finalists were: "Desperately Seeking Susan," "New York, New York," "On the Town," "The Wedding Banquet" and "Crooklyn."

Written and directed by Spike Lee in 1994, "Crooklyn" is a semi-autobiographical portrait of a school teacher, her stubborn jazz musician husband and their five kids living in Brooklyn in 1973. It's a slice-of-life story that depicts Brooklyn in the 1970s, complete with kids being kids, while their parents are trying to make ends meet -  accompanied by the finest '70s music and a special cameo by Mr. Lee himself.
