Gearing up for another inspiring season of music education, the Noel Pointer Foundation (NPF), the Bedford Stuyvesant-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children through music, just announced its Fall class schedule and its open house on Saturday, September 9.

For over 20 years, the Noel Pointer Foundation has offered string music instruction for students of all levels, including parent- children programs to encourage intergenerational learning for adults and children.

For the Fall season 2017, beginning students may register for the "Roots I" or "Roots II" classes during which they can learn their instruments and basic music theory including note reading, key signatures, scales and rhythms while understanding how these concepts apply to the music. "Roots II" takes students further by reinforcing note reading, music theory and musicianship, technique and tone production.

Students with intermediate experience can sign up for the "Debut-Ensemble," a performance class for students that provides an introduction to ensemble musicianship, or the "Prelude-Ensemble," an intermediate-level performance ensemble which allows students to build their repertoire in an orchestral setting.

Advanced students may audition for the "NPF Community Youth Orchestra," a performance group that challenges selected students to achieve their full potential as young musicians while offering once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunities with well known artists, or "The Noel Pointer String Players," a small chamber ensemble, which is open by invitation or instructor recommendation only. The "String Players" consist of the foundation's most advanced students and perform a wide variety of music including classical, gospel and pop at various events around the city.

For the youngest aspiring artists, NPF offers the "Parent & Me" program, a class for children aged 3-4 along with a parent or guardian. During the class students and parents will learn basic violin technique and posture as well as receive an introduction to reading music. Additionally, parents may take the opportunity to have fun on their own while learning an instrument in the "Parent Orchestra."

Founded in 1995, the foundation honors the legacy of the late Grammy-nominated jazz violinist and arts education advocate Noel W. Pointer by providing string music instruction in New York City public and charter schools, as well as after-school, Saturday and summer programs. Noel W. Pointer believed that learning to play a string instrument is a transformative experience that advances children's lives. Since its inception, the foundation has served over 30,000 students citywide.
