On Thursday, Councilmember Laurie A. Cumbo, who is running for re-election, received the key endorsement of Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams.

"I am proud to announce my endorsement of Councilmember Laurie Cumbo's re-election," said Adams. "No one is fighting harder for her community than Laurie, and I look forward to working with her for another four years."

The endorsement came just days after Adams, Cumbo and other city officials secured a deal to freeze rents for 600 affordable housing units in Prospect Height's Brooklyn Jewish Hospital.

Cumbo, who was first elected in 2013, represents the 35th District including Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, and parts of  Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. She serves as the chairperson of the Committee on Women's Issues, as the co-chairperson of the Women's Caucus and is a member of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus. She is also a member of several committees including Cultural Affairs, Libraries, and International Intergroup Relations; Finance; Higher Education; Public Housing and Youth Services.

Cumbo said she is honored to receive the borough president's endorsement.

"It has been an honor to work with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams over the last three years on issues that matter most to the 35th District," said Cumbo. "We've fought side-by-side for victories on issues ranging from low-income housing, public safety to capital improvements in our schools and domestic violence prevention."

So far, Cumbo already garnered the support from New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, Speaker of the New York City Council Melissa Mark-Viverito and Councilmember Vanessa Gibson, as well as won the endorsements of several members of the City Council's LGBTQ Caucus.

The primary elections are held on September 12, 2017.
