'Told It First Hand,' the interview series which is part of the 13th Annual Brooklyn Hip- Hop Festival, will feature legendary rapper Rakim on Monday, July 10, at the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Arguably the greatest hip-hop M.C. of all time, Rakim will sit down with Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival founder, entrepreneur and activist Wes Jackson to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the seminal album, "Paid in Full." Rakim is credited for the jazzy, heavily stylistic and seemingly effortless delivery of his lyrical content. Imparting a serious poetic sensibility to his work, Rakim influenced rappers for generations to come, as did the classic "Paid in Full" which caused a stir in the hip-hop music world with its novel sound, approach and subject matter.

As in previous years, 'Told It First Hand,' the intimate discussion with the "doers" in hip-hop, returns to the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS). Founded in 1863, BHS connects the past to the present and makes the vibrant history of Brooklyn tangible, relevant and meaningful, and facilitates civic dialogue, thoughtful engagement and community outreach, a mission shared by the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.

Established in 2005, the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is New York City's largest event that showcases the positivity of hip-hop culture, celebrating and preserving hip-hop's legacy of promoting artistic progression, community building and social change. The festival offers a variety of culture-based educational and entertainment events such as panel discussions, exhbitions, movie screenings and a family-friendly block party. This year, the festival returns to the NYC waterfront from July 10—16.
