The DOT and DOS will suspend street cleaning of Eastern Parkway Service Lane for a 3-month trial period

By Rabbi Yaacov Behrman

Dear Community Residents:

We are pleased to announce that the Department of Transportation and the Department of Sanitation have agreed to temporarily suspend Saturday street cleaning on the South Side of Eastern Parkway Service Lane — from Nostrand Avenue to Schenectady Avenue - for a 3-month trial period.

Over the next three months, the Department of Sanitation will assess the cleanliness of Eastern Parkway, and evaluate the impact of Saturday street cleaning on Eastern Parkway's overall cleanliness.

In New York City a property owner has the obligation to keep the sidewalk in front of his/her property clear of litter. This responsibility does not end at the curb, but extends 18 inches into the city streets.  Accordingly, we strongly encourage local residents, organizations, and businesses to comply with this regulation, and make every effort to keep Eastern Parkway clean. There is a high probability that the Department of Sanitation will resume Saturday street cleaning if there is a significant increase in litter.

The Saturday street cleaning suspension was made possible through interagency collaboration between the Department of Transportation, the Department of Sanitation, the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit (CAU), and Community Board 9's Environmental Protection Committee.

A special thank you to State Senator Jesse Hamilton, who collected signatures in support of this change as far back as 2013,

Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, Council Member Laurie Cumbo, and Community Board 9 Chairman Musa Moore for helping the committee navigate this incredibly complicated process to ensure the Saturday suspension happened.
