On Sunday inside of the BAM Gilman Opera House, the community gathered to pay loving tribute to one of the community's most beloved leaders of African arts and Culture: Baba Chuck Davis who passed away two weeks ago on May 13.

The event was organized by City Councilmember Laurie Cumbo. It was much more of a celebration than it was a mourning, as Baba Chuck would have wanted it no other way. He was a dancer, renowned choreographer and a cultural icon known for his larger-than-life personality and ability to make anyone smile. Baba Chuck also was largely responsible for bringing the Dance Africa performance to BAM. It has since grown into the nation's largest festival of African dance which, this year, celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Please enjoy these photos capturing the tribute ceremony celebrating the life and legacy of Baba Chuck, held at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House located at 30 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn.
