The young residents of Ingersoll Houses now have one more reason to plie, leap and jump for joy! Last Monday, a brand-new dance dance studio opened in the University Settlement Atlantic Terminal Cornerstone Community Center in Fort Greene.

Atlantic Terminal Community Center was opened near Barclays Center in January 2014 as a part of Ingersoll Houses. The site offers programming, including after-school and summer camp sessions, as well as intramural sports teams, fitness classes, and mentoring. The Center serves NYCHA residents as well as residents of the surrounding neighborhood.

The new dance studio was opened thanks to the allocation of $135,000, allocated by City Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo. The project was overseen by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

The brand-new, state-of-the-art studio includes wood flooring, double ballet barres, full length wall mirrors, under stage storage doors, as well as prefabricated ramping for ADA compliance.

"Fort Greene is the heart of Brooklyn's cultural scene, and now the residents of the Atlantic Terminal Houses have a new space that will inspire, empower and cultivate the next generation of Misty Copelands and Alvin Aileys," said Cumbo in a statement. "Arts education is an integral component in the development of our youth - instilling confidence, self-expression, physical fitness and teamwork.

"Despite federal funding cuts to NYCHA and arts education, we are setting the standard by continuing to invest resources that will create opportunities for thousands of residents and families to thrive."

Isaac Monche, a participant at the center, praised the new room: "This is a gift to us and for the community," he said. "I can't wait to actually start dancing in a room that is for dancing. We won't have to be in the classrooms anymore. This is the coolest room in this center."

"This dance studio will help our youth tap into their creativity and gain valuable lessons, such as discipline and teamwork," said Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Bill Chong.

The dance studio is located in the Barclays Center footprint, where many community investments were promised.

The stadium made use of eminent domain to get the necessary land to build the project. Investments into the community with jobs and affordable housing were promised, which was managed by Forest City Ratner at the time.
