BFC Partners, the Local Development Corporation of Crown Heights (LDCCH) and CAMBA, declared on Monday that the new Bedford-Union Armory will become a permanent home to six non-profit organizations which aim to serve the residents of Crown Heights and Central Brooklyn by providing free or low-cost programing, as reported by Kings County Politics.
"Non-profits are part of the backbone of Central Brooklyn and we are committed to providing these institutions with the affordable space they need," said Don Capoccia, principal of BFC Partners.
The current plan for the Armory redevelopment seeks to make 50 percent of the unit affordable for low- and middle-income residents; 20 percent of condominium units will be available to residents with a median income. Commercial space will be offered at lower rates for local small businesses and non-profits in need of affordable rents. Also, the redevelopment of the Armory will feature basketball courts and other multi-sport courts, as well as a swimming pool to offer space to local youth sports leagues, senior programs and others.
Yet, an alliance of local politicians including Assemblywoman Diana Richardson (D-Crown Heights, Lefferts Gardens), Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-Crown Heights, Flatbush, Sheepshead Bay, Brownsville), State Sen. Jesse Hamilton (D-Central Brooklyn) and Assemblyman Walter Mosley (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights) oppose the proposed plan, fighting to make the entire Armory project 100 percent affordable housing.
The public scoping meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7, at 6:30pm.
