Last week, the Kings County District Attorney's office announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of 19-year-old Brooklyn resident Rashawn Brazell. The arrest came almost 12 years following the homicide-- one that many had assumed would remain unsolved.

Minutes later, the office announced the formation of a new "Cold Case" unit at the D.A.'s office that will investigate unsolved homicides and other crimes. Additionally, the new unit will staffed by a DNA specialist to support cases that can benefit from advanced DNA analysis.

"A lot of the previous DNA testing was limited," said acting D.A. Eric Gonzalez. "Now with advances in science and forensic ability, we can go back and figure out which cases are suitable for new testing protocols."

The new unit will make Brooklyn DA's Office the only prosecutorial office in the State with an in-house DNA expert.
