MetroTech Tree Lighting Celebrates Christmas, the Arts and the Diversity of Brooklyn

This year's 27th Annual MetroTech Tree Lighting Ceremony reminds us what it truly means to be a Brooklynite during the holiday season. The event was hosted at the MetroTech Commons Thursday evening, sponsored by Forest City Ratner Companies.

img_2031This year's 27th Annual MetroTech Tree Lighting Ceremony reminds us what it truly means to be a Brooklynite during the holiday season.

The event was hosted at the MetroTech Commons Thursday evening, sponsored by Forest City Ratner Companies.  It showcased performances by Brooklyn based talent groups , including two choirs, a dance troupe and of course, Santa!

reindeer1Grammy-award winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus performed Christmas classics, like "Deck the Halls" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."  They were presented "The Joy of Giving" award by FCR President and CEO, MaryAnne Gilmartin.

"We at Brooklyn Youth Chorus are so honored to be part of this tree lighting, and to be part of the lighting up of lives from 72 zip codes, 650 children and multiple schools, we are going to be everywhere this year,"  said Elise Bernhardt, executive director of Brooklyn Youth Chorus.

img_2029Dancewave, a Brooklyn-based dance school performed a justice-themed dance inspired by Plato's Republic.  The dance featured a brief monologue from the renowned book.

Speakers at the tree lighting included Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Reverend Dr. Hubert Daughtry, FCR Executive Chairman Bruce Ratner and Gilmartin.  img_2032"This tree lighting is for everyone; in Brooklyn, we embrace diversity, we don't leave anyone out, and that's what we're all about," said Ratner.  tree1Rev. Daughtry, who has has attended every annual MetroTech tree lighting ceremony, called for a prayer to bring peace on Earth.  The Christmas tree was illuminated at the very end of the ceremony, as Santa came out and greeted children. The Brooklyn Youth Choir concluded the event with more christmas favorites.
