In accepting Calderone prize, Bassett highlights racism's impact on public health

Early in her career, Dr. Mary Bassett wrote an article for Monthly Review entitled "The Health of Black Folk" in which she discussed the normalization — even the expectation — that blacks would suffer from poor health. Her conclusion was that racism — its past and its present — was a prime factor in the social determinants that led to significantly worse health outcomes for African Americans.
