NYPD Alert: Pokémon Go Safety Tips

Pokémon Go, a free-to-play, augmented reality game, hit the market a little over a week ago and it's already one of the most popular mobile games in history.  Although most users are reporting an interactive experience that it compelling them to go outside and play, some people are finding themselves in situations that can be dangerous.

In cities throughout the country there have been reports of injuries, accidents, and robberies.  According to a report released today, there was even an incident where a New York man crashed his vehicle while attempting to play the game.   In hopes of preparing players as they move throughout the city, the New York Police Department Community Affairs Bureau released a list of precautions for players to consider before venturing out into the city.

Pokémon Go Safety Tips:

  • Be alert at all times
  • Stay aware of your surroundings
  • Play in pairs or as a group to ensure your safety
  • Do not drive or ride your bike, skateboard, or other device while interacting with the app...you can't do both safety
  • Do not trespass onto private property or go to areas you usually would not if you weren't playing Pokémon Go
  • Be aware and tell your kids about "stranger-danger".  The app may draw strangers together in real life at 'Pokéstops'
  • Parents - be aware of 3rd party software apps claiming to enhance the gaming experience however, these 3rd party apps only gives access to sensitive data - i.e. name, email, calendar

Most importantly, the Community Affairs Bureau wants to remind players to have fun!
