The Brooklyn Museum Offers Diverse Public Programs Throughout July

Just as summer weather arrives, cultural hubs like The Brooklyn Museum are ready and willing to offer a variety of activities for people of all ages that aim to enrich their lives.

Just as summer weather arrives, cultural hubs like The Brooklyn Museum are ready and willing to offer a variety of activities for people of all ages that aim to enrich their lives.  Their public programs include talks, performances, and hands-on workshops for children and adults that compliment the Museum's exhibitions and permanent collections.  While some of the events are free as long as you purchase admission to the museum, most of the events take place on Thursdays and are hosted by Squarespace, providing free admission to anyone wanting to take part in the fun.

Boom Box Residencies: Natasha Diggs with #SoulInTheHorn

Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion and Lobby, 1st Floor

Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace.

Natasha Diggs and #SoulInTheHorn mix live horn with disco, soul, Latin, hip-hop, and funk on Tom Sachs's boom boxes.

Saturday, July 9, 11 am-6 pm

AFRICA SALON: Disguise

This event takes place throughout the museum.

Free with Museum admission.

AFRICA SALON, Yale University's contemporary African arts festival joins the Brooklyn Museum to offer an afternoon of performances, talks, film screenings, and workshops, inspired by the exhibition Disguise: Masks and Global African Art. A dance party, hosted by NON Records, will end the full day program.

Boom Box Residencies: Mursi Layne

Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion and Lobby, 1st Floor

Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace.

Mursi Layne performs a set that includes hip-hop, club, dancehall, soca, electronic, and soul.

Thursday, July 21, 7 pm 

Film: T-Rex

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace.

View a screening of T-Rex (Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper, 2015, 91 min.), a film about 17-year-old Claressa "T-Rex" Shields of Flint, Michigan, fighting to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. Followed by a conversation with Claressa's coach, Jason Crutchfield, and Brooklyn-based pro boxer Heather Hardy. Co-presented with Independent Lens and THIRTEEN, and with the Women's Sports Foundation.
