As New York prepares for another sweltering summer, children, teens and adults are making plans to enjoy water sports and swimming pools as much as possible.  Whether the summer relief comes in the form of a beach trip, a public pool day or a visit to the local YMCA, water safety procedures are important to keep a community prepared. According to recent article, Bedstuy Brooklyn's YMCA is getting the neighborhood ready for summer with free water safety classes to individuals of all ages.

While the class offers guided methods to help teach someone how to swim, they also invite individuals to further their swimming education with more advanced technique classes. During the free class, students will learn swimming technique and how to stay afloat in all types of bodies of water.

Although New Yorkers and city dwellers alike often avoid water safety education, statistics show that small children can easily fall victim to accidental drownings no matter the environment.  According to statistics by the Center for Disease Control, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of 1 to 4.

In hopes of accommodating busy families, the free water safety classes are offered in the afternoon and evenings until April 30th, 2016.  Guests can register for the program in person at the YMCA, located at 1121 Bedford Ave.
