Worried about filing your taxes by the April 15 deadline? Well, you may have a little more wiggle room.

This year's tax deadline has been extended to April 18, giving tax filers an extra weekend to get it together! As a result, many sites, including the VITA sites at Brooklyn Coop will remain open, to help residents take advantage of the extra 3 days... and for free!

Here are 7 VITA sites for free filing: Both Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union sites on Myrtle Avenue in Bushwick and on Dekalb Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant; at St. Nick's Alliance on Broadway, and out of the Williamsburg Community Center with St Nicks and NYCHA on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg; in SSJ Training Center in Flatbush; in  the Greg Jackson Community Center with Community Solutions — Brownsville Partnership in Brownsville, and Neighborhood Housing Services of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

If it looks like you still cannot file on time, you can get an automatic six-month extension of time to file Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return, or Form IT-203, Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return.

You can also get an automatic extension (generally five months) of time to file Form IT-204, Partnership Return, or Form IT-205, Fiduciary Income Tax Return.

You must request the extension of time to file on or before the due date of your return. Request your extension online.

  • You can complete your request for free online.
  • You must e-file your extension if you prepare your extension using software that supports e-file.
  • If your paid preparer is required to e-file your tax return, and is also preparing your extension request, the preparer must e-file your extension request.

The online and e-file options will provide you a confirmation that your extension request was received.
