Sleep-Related Infant Death and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

According to the New York State Department of Health, "About, 1,200 NYS infants under one year of age die each year." Of those deaths, 7.5% are referred to as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) due to unsafe sleep practices. On average, every year, one infant dies each week in New York City from a sleep-related injury related to the infant's sleep position and their environment. That is, approximately 80% of all infant deaths in NYC are injury related, a number that has not changed significantly over the years. Brooklyn and the Bronx lead the other boroughs in these deaths.

Research into the causes of SIDS continues; however, safe sleep practices have reduced SIDS deaths by more than 50%.
