Speaking of love, there's a bunch of lovely election things to do this weekend. Perhaps getting familiar with the candidates and their platforms, means you won't try to write in the president from Scandal on your ballot. So we count to five, because it's not easy to count on the weekends after St Patrick's Day, and keeping it simple might help us help your weekend.
FRIDAY
Alabaster Art Show Opening, The Silent barn, 6pm-9pm, 603 Bushwick Avenue, Free (Bushwick)
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the work of Alabaster, but it's noteworthy, whimsical and filled with bold, modern statements about life. It's a Friday evening opening, which means you might slide by with a co-worker or office mate, and that would be super cool. The work of Alabaster lends to conversation between strangers, friends and Uber poolers, causing unique responses from viewers. SATURDAY
Punch Drunk In Love Screening-W/Live Orchestra, BAM, 30 Lafayette St., $45 & up (Ft. Greene)
Adam Sandler has literally made one good movie and this is it. Ok, maybe two, but this is definitely one of 'em. He looked like he was gonna swing towards dramatic acting after this movie, but it also looked like Baylor was gonna beat Yale in the tournament yesterday, but that turned out differently as well. The soundtrack of Punch Drunk In Love has been loved by many who aren't even fans of the actual film, and specifically for the collaboration between the multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion and the filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, whose previous team-up was on the rather classic movie "Magnolia". The quirky process and use of a harmonium aside, this Saturday night at BAM, Sony Pictures and Paul T. Anderson will screen the special scoreless version of the film, whilst the Wordless Music Orchestra live scores it with some Brooklyn swag. Jon Brion himself is the Orchestra's maestro and is joined by a few wonderful people, including Norah Jones. The Naked Detective, Littlefields, 622 Degraw St., 9pm, $15-$25 (Park Slope)
Wasabassco presents a risque murder mystery as only that brand of burlesque can do. Burlesque is way ubiquitous, but like most performance art, it's a levels to that shit, and they do it on a higher plateau. It's like a radio mystery from a time before talking pictures crashed living rooms and family dinner was mandatory. It's a case made for a gumshoe or private dick and will feature a roster of shady politicians, floozies, boozie confrontations and yes, a murder. Cocktail Magic, Weylin B Seymour's, 176 Broadway, 10pm-1am, $124.50 (Williamsburg)
This party is sold out for the first tier, with only second tier tickets available. The price is kinda steep, but if you want to let loose and let go of some cash for crazy cocktails, while also supporting the Well Dunn Foundation, then this could be fun. If you have any intimate, first hand stories about the Well Dunn Foundation, please leave it in the comments and share some knowledge, which would be well done (pun remorse).
SUNDAY
Beetle Juice's Wedding, House Of Yes, 2 Wyckoff Avenue, 5pm, $42.50-$65 (Bushwick)
Crashing a movie wedding is always fun, especially when Beetlejuice is the groom, all the attendees are dead and it's produced by BBQ Films. Truth be told, Beetle Juice has been after old girl for a minute now, and he must continuously be thwarted in his attempt to marry and consummate his dirty, disgusting love for Winona Ryder. Crashing this wedding is all in good spirits, because the other attendees are ghosts, ghouls and yes, spirits. Dressing the part is encouraged, less the other attendees make you for a living human and suck your soul dry like a divorce lawyer.
Expensive tickets puts you in the actual wedding party, while the cheaper tickets merely puts you in the wedding, but either way, feel free to speak or forever hold your peace on Saturday, especially if you've never had the pleasure of objecting to someone's nuptials.
Brooklyn Boogie Brunch, Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, 12:00pm - 4:00pm, $10-$20 (Gowanus)
Brooklyn's favorite concert to benefit PS 295 returns Sunday, March 20 to Littlefield. Now in its third year, the afternoon family event will feature music for all ages. Performances by "Captain" Kirk Douglas of The Roots; Grammy-nominated Maimouna Youssef; jazz pianist Charles Sibirsky; Chris Lightcap's Superette with Nels Cline of Wilco; urban folk rocker Jessie White; Boston's The Gravel Pit; local kids band Blue Lightning; percussionist Gilmar Gomes and DJ K Conan of Barbès.
Other activities will include art projects and a raffle with prizes including tickets to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in April, the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and a Nets game at Barclay's Center. Tasty food will be available from Brooklyn favorites: Southside, Korzo, Miriam, Brothers Bagels and The Chocolate Room, with cash bar by Littlefield.
