The Brooklyn Bridge Gateway Project, New Gym on Montague St to be Discussed at Upcoming CB2 Meeting

Community Board 2

Community Board 2, covering the neighborhoods of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Navy Yard, DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn, will hold its general meeting on Wednesday, October 14, 6:00 pm, in the Third Floor Auditorium of the Brooklyn Hospital Center, located at 121 DeKalb Avenue in Fort Greene.

Here's what you can expect:

Presentations

  • Prior to the board business, the community board and guests will hear two short presentations beginning with an overview of the services provided by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the Brooklyn office of NYC Business Solutions.   • Harrison Silver, with New York Road Runners, will speak about Open Run, free weekly runs/walks open to people of all ages and pages.   • The business meeting will begin with votes to approve the agenda and the minutes of the September 9, 2015 general meeting. Pursuant to Article V of the Community Board 2 (CB2) bylaws, 1st Vice Chairperson Irene Janner will preside in the absence of Chairperson Shirley A. McRae.
  • Per Article VIII of the bylaws, Ms. Janner will announce the members of the Nominating Committee as part of the Chair's Report, which will be followed by a report by District Manager Robert Perris.

Committees for Board Action

Land Use Committee--Land Use Committee Chairperson Carlton Gordon will present the committee's recommendation (10-0-1) that Community Board 2 support Board of Standards and Appeals application #160-15-BZ, for a special permit to allow a "physical culture establishment" (gym) at 186 Montague Street.

Transportation and Public Safety Committee--John Dew, chairperson of the Transportation and Public Safety Committee, will present three committee recommendations. The committee voted 10 in favor, one opposed, one abstention (10-1-1) to recommend Community Board 2 endorse a sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas, the public art component of the Brooklyn Bridge Gateway Project.

Mr. Dew will also present the committee's unanimous (12-0-0) recommendation that CB2 support installation of a crosswalk at Boerum Place and Bergen Street. The intersection does not have a traffic signal, which generally precludes a crosswalk.

The committee also voted nine in favor, three opposed, no abstentions (9-3-0) to recommend the community board support co-naming Putnam Avenue, between Grand Avenue and Downing Street, in honor of Cecil A. Collymore. Mr. Dew will present the item.

Committees to Report

The community board's economic development, health, parks, and education committees will report on their meetings since the September 9, 2015 general meeting.

Open Session and Other Business

The general meeting will conclude with an open session at which the public may speak briefly—please sign the speakers list—and other business as introduced by board members.
